Derby

A derby is the simplest format: catch the biggest fish (or the most fish) over a set period. Derbies are often family-friendly and beginner-welcoming, with modest entry fees and a relaxed vibe. Some run for a single day; others run all season at a lake or community, with a running leaderboard. If you've never competed before, a derby is a great first step.

Open

An open is exactly what it sounds like — anyone can enter by paying the fee. Opens usually score a limit of fish by weight or length and tend to draw competitive, experienced fields. Bigger purses and bigger names show up at opens, so expect a steeper learning curve and a more serious atmosphere.

Team and boat

In a team or boat event, two or more anglers fish together and combine their catch into a single score. This is the most common format in both bass and inshore fishing. It rewards good communication and lets a newer angler partner with a veteran to learn the ropes.

Draw

In a draw tournament, competitors are paired randomly — often a boater with a non-boater. Draws level the playing field and are popular in clubs and qualifying circuits because they emphasize individual skill over who owns the nicest boat. Series

A series strings several events together across a season, awarding points at each one. Consistency wins a series, not a single big day — finishing solidly in every event often beats winning once and bombing the rest. Multi-day events
